Sligo University Hospital Opens New 26-Bed Medical Offsite Ward at St John’s Community Hospital Sligo, 13 September 2025 – Sligo University Hospital (SUH) is pleased to announce the official opening of a new 26-bed Medical Offsite Ward, located at St John’s Community Hospital in Sligo. This state-of-the-art facility includes six four-bed rooms and two single en-suite rooms, offering high-quality accommodation in line with national healthcare standards. The new ward forms part of a strategic extension of Sligo University Hospital’s inpatient services, aimed at enhancing patient flow from the Emergency Department, reducing pressure on core hospital services, and improving the overall patient experience. Funded under the HSE 2024 Capital Plan, this development represents an investment of over €2.5 million for the design, construction, and full equipping of the new facility. The Medical Offsite Ward is a specialised unit providing structured medical care for patients who meet specific clinical criteria. It offers a supportive environment for those requiring a short additional period of hospital-based care. Patients will continue to benefit from round-the-clock medical supervision and multidisciplinary therapeutic supportfrom a full team of health and social care professionals. Grainne McCann, Hospital Manager, welcomed the development, stating: “This new facility is a welcome addition to the hospital, allowing us to expand our inpatient care in a contemporary, purpose-built setting. It has been designed to deliver personalised and compassionate care that supports our patients’ medical needs and recovery.” Patients are already experiencing the benefits of the new environment. Elizabeth Fallon, who recently transferred to the ward, commented: “When I came to the new medical ward, I was flabbergasted with the space and facilities. Everybody here is fantastic, and the atmosphere is great. Everyone was very welcoming and cheerful on my arrival. The physios are fantastic. Last night was the first night I got a good sleep. My son, who came to see me, was also amazed with the new environment.” This important development supports the hospital’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care while enhancing capacity and service delivery across the Saolta University Health Care Group.
Graham High School’s Dallas Stadium was evacuated during their game against Champaign County rival Urbana due to threats of violence, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and reports from the Bellefontaine Examiner and Urbana Daily Citizen.
Deputies responded to the school around 8:30 p.m. and remained on campus as of 10 p.m., reports said.
The game will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The Falcons led 40-27 when the game was halted.
There will be no entry free on Saturday morning when play resumes, according to the Urbana Athletics Facebook page.
